The CWU North Anglia Branch condemns in the strongest possible terms the shocking rise in threats, abuse, and assaults faced by our Openreach engineers, as reported by The Guardian.
Our members work tirelessly, often alone, in all weathers, and in difficult conditions, to keep the country connected. The idea that they should be met with violence or intimidation is utterly unacceptable.
The rollout of panic alarms for engineers is a grim but necessary step in light of the growing dangers they face. But let us be clear: this is not just a safety issue, it is a matter of basic dignity and respect.
To our members: you are not alone. If you ever feel unsafe or threatened while doing your job, we will stand by you. Report it, and we will act.
We demand that Openreach and BT take every possible step to protect frontline staff and that those responsible for these disgusting attacks are brought to justice.
You abuse one of us—you answer to all of us.
