Report of the 37th National Hazards Conference

Mind & Body: The Critical Work of Safety Reps in Protecting Workers

Online and in-person event, Keele University 4-6 September 2026

Every year union safety reps and safety activists gather together at this unique grass-roots event aimed at addressing the challenges in keeping workers safe. This year the challenges continue with a changing political landscape, misinformation, cuts to public services, deregulation, the effects of climate change, rapid technological advances in workplaces and the dramatic rise in psychosocial issues at work. The 37th Hazards conference aimed to empower and educate activists in order to support workers through these changes as well as ask the difficult questions. None of this would have been possible without the dedicated help from volunteers who signed up as speakers, guides, administrators, advisors and general helpers. Union participation, sponsorship and donations also helped to keep the conference costs low along with those who donated their time. Thank you to all who attended and contributed towards helping empower workers in workplace safety.

The 2026 conference saw over 240 activists take part in person, with a smaller proportion attending online. Many of the conference delegates were attending for the first time and it was great to see 18 unions represented and like last year many coming from diverse backgrounds and occupations.
